SHE AND I

We were never close.

Never dyed our hair together.

The boyfriends. Alternative

Zero is not dead and when it is blue
will not be what the ocean makes of things
despite you. Can't put it in a jar assuming

June 10: JeFF recently won a spot on the Manchester, NH slam team, which will be competing against over 70 other teams of poets at this year's National Poetry Slam in St. Paul, MN. JeFF's performance poetry has been taught in university classes in Illinois, Ohio, Louisiana, and Texas, so this will be an interesting test of the popular appeal of his brand of spoken word.

April is another busy month here at Seven Kitchens. Announcing the third annual ROBIN BECKER CHAPBOOK PRIZE: Please read the complete guidelines below, and please help to spread the word!

SEVEN KITCHENS PRESS announces the 2010 ROBIN BECKER CHAPBOOK PRIZE for an original, unpublished poetry manuscript in English by a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered or Queer writer.
Prize: 50 copies.
Submission deadline: Postmarked between March 1 and May 15 of each year.
Eligibility: Open to all L/G/B/T/Q poets writing in English (no translations, please).
Please note: Two manuscripts will be selected as co-winners of the 2010 Robin Becker Prize: one by a writer with no previous book or chapbook, and one by a writer with previous book or chapbook publication.

Please read the guidelines carefully; the complete guidelines are posted on the Seven Kitchens site and we are not responsible for other versions of the guidelines that may be posted, in whole or in part, elsewhere.

COMPLETE GUIDELINES:

Any poet who identifies as L/G/B/T/Q is eligible to submit to the Robin Becker Chapbook Prize.

The manuscript itself need not address L/G/B/T/Q themes, though such work is welcome.
The final judge for this year's series is Eloise Klein Healy.

Submit a paginated manuscript of 16-24 pages (not including front matter).

Include two cover pages: one with the manuscript title, author name, address, e-mail and phone number; the second cover page should have the manuscript title only.
Include a table of contents page, if appropriate.
The collection may contain a series of poems or one single chapbook-length poem.
Include, if applicable, an acknowledgments page for work previously published.
Please include, on a separate page, a brief (100-150 words) bigraphical note, including a statement of any previous book or chapbook publication.

The author's name must not appear in the manuscript.

Collaborative works are accepted. Should a winning manuscript be collaboratively written, the author copies will be shared equally.
All manuscripts will be blind judged, meaning all identifying material will be separated from the manuscripts as they are logged in.
Manuscript titles and their log numbers will be posted on the Seven Kitchens web site [http:// sevenkitchens dot blogspot dot com] as they are processed.

Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify us promptly by email if your manuscript is accepted elsewhere.

Submissions must be posted between March 1 and May 15, 2010.
The winning manuscripts will be announced on or before August 15, 2010.
Manuscript finalists will also be announced, and may be eligible for publication by Seven Kitchens Press.

Manuscripts will not be returned. E-mailed submission is preferred, but you may send via regular mail.

If sending by mail, do not staple or bind your manuscript; please use a binder clip and mail flat in an 8.5 x 11 envelope. Please do not use expedited delivery services; your postmark date is sufficient to ensure your entry qualification, and we will allow 7-10 days for receipt of all mailed entries after May 15. Use First-Class Mail and consider spending the money you've saved on a chapbook from a small, independent press!
If you are sending by e-mail, please send one document in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx files); you must include the words "Robin Becker Chapbook" in the subject line of your e-mail to get past our spam filter.
Include a $12 reading fee with each manuscript you submit (multiple submissions are welcome). IMPORTANT: Checks should be made payable to Ron Mohring. Online payment may be made via PayPal to seven kitchens at yahoo dot com.
Each entrant will receive one copy of either winning chapbook (entrant's choice of which title), to be published during the winter of 2010-11.
Each co-winner will receive fifty (50) copies of her or his chapbook. Additionally, the publisher will distribute ten review copies and will solicit online reviews of each title.

ABOUT THIS YEAR'S JUDGE:

Eloise Klein Healy is the author of six books of poetry: Building Some Changes (Beyond Baroque Foundation); A Packet Beating Like a Heart (Books of a Feather Press); Ordinary Wisdom (Paradise Press/re-released by Red Hen Press); Artemis in Echo Park (Firebrand Books), nominated for the Lambda Book Award and released as a spoken word recording by New Alliance Records; and her collections from Red Hen Press, Passing and most recently, The Islands Project: Poems for Sappho. The Inevitable Press published her chapbook Women's Studies Chronicles in the Laguna Poets Series.

Healy's work has been widely anthologized in collections including The World in Us: Lesbian and Gay Poetry of the Next Wave; The Geography of Home: California's Poetry of Place; Intimate Nature: The Bond Between Women and Animals; Grand Passion: Poets of Los Angeles and Beyond; and California Poetry: From the Gold Rush to the Present.

The Founding Chair of the MFA in Creative Writing Program at Antioch University Los Angeles where she is Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing Emerita, Healy is also the co-founder of ECO-ARTS, an ecotourism/arts venture and Guest Poet at the Idyllwild Summer Poetry Festival. Her imprint with Red Hen Press, Arktoi Books, established in 2006, specializes in publishing the work of lesbian authors.

This chapbook series honors Robin Becker, whose continuing accomplishments as a poet, professor, and mentor of lesbian and gay writers deserve wider acclaim. Becker serves as poetry editor for the Women's Review of Books and is a professor of English and Women's Studies at Pennsylvania State University. She is the author of six collections of poems, including Giacometti's Dog (1990), All-American Girl (1996), The Horse Fair (2000), and Domain of Perfect Affection (2006), all from the University of Pittsburgh Press, and of the chapbook Venetian Blue (Frick Art & Historical Center, 2002).

We have lots of announcements for February: First and foremost is the February 15 release of RJ Gibson's Scavenge, co-winner of the 2009 Robin Becker Chapbook Award. If you entered a manuscript last year, you're entitled to a free copy of either RJ's or Erin Bertram's chapbook--expect an e-mail this week with a special discount if you'd like to receive both. . . Production continues on several spring titles: The book of small treasures, by Christine Klocek-Lim, has been redesigned and will hopefully appear by the end of this month. Kevin McLellan's Round Trip, mentioned above, comes out in mid-March. Rebecca Lauren's The Schwenkfelders, co-winner of the 2009 Keystone Prize, comes out in April. And two summer titles in our Editor's Series, John Repp's Big Conneautee and Terry Kirts' To the Refrigerator Gods, are not to be missed.

We're very excited to announce three new titles in our Editor's Series, all scheduled for publication later this year: Gabriel Welsch's An Eye Fluent in Gray, a finalist for the 2009 Keystone Chapbook Prize, will be released as #9 in the Editor's Series. Household of Water, Moon and Snow, by Todd Davis, will be #10 in the series. And Homeland: A Panorama in 50 States, by Pedro Ponce, will close out 2010 as #11 in the series. CFS: 2010 ReBound Series

Submissions are now being accepted for our second annual ReBound Series. Please read on for complete guidelines:

The ReBound Series expands the mission of Seven Kitchens Press to bring new and/or underappreciated writers to a broader audience by reprinting out-of-print chapbooks in select new editions. Each title in the series will feature an introductory foreword by a nominating writer (who will be given the opportunity to edit the introduction); self-nominations will not be accepted. As with all our titles, the authors (if available) will work closely with the editor in the production process; each chapbook will feature a full-color cover and ISBN, and will be printed in an initial set of 125 copies. (Subsequent printings will follow if the initial print run sells out.)

The ReBound Series from Seven Kitchens Press will select one to two out-of-print chapbooks each fall to publish in new editions the following calendar year.
Each chapbook submitted for consideration must be accompanied by a two- to five-paragraph nomination, completed by a writer other than the author. This nomination may be sent separately, and will be edited to serve as the introductory foreword to the winning chapbook(s).
The reading period will extend from October 1 - December 15, and the selected title(s) will be announced in February of 2010.
Each winning author will receive fifty (50) copies of his or her hand-trimmed, hand-tied chapbook. Additionally, the publisher will distribute ten review copies to reviewers, libraries, and organizations at the author's recommendation.
Nominated chapbooks may not exceed 27 pages in length (excluding front matter).
Chapbooks published within larger bound works (i.e., as a section in a literary journal or as part of an omnibus volume) are eligible. Chapbooks published online are not eligible: we are looking to revive out-of-print work.
Submit an original copy of the chapbook, along with a cover letter of nomination by a second writer. [NOTE: The nomination letter may be sent separately, but must be provided for the winning title(s) as part of the editorial process.]
Chapbooks may be submitted by either the author or nominator, but must be accompanied by a $12 reading fee, payable by check to Ron Mohring or via PayPal to sevenkitchens at yahoo dot com.
Do not include SASE or SAS postcard for acknowledgment; work received will be publicly logged by title and manuscript number on the Seven Kitchens blog.
Manuscripts will not be returned. If you do not wish to send a rare copy of the chapbook, please send a clean, legible photocopy of all pages, including the front and back cover.
Each manuscript must be accompanied by a signed statement from the author, nominator or literary executor, attesting that the work is out of print.
Winners will be responsible for securing reprint permission from the original publisher within three months of 7KP's winning announcement.
Each entrant will receive one copy of the winning chapbook (if more than one winning title is selected, entrants may choose which title they would like to receive).
Entrants are responsible for keeping the press apprised of changes in address or contact e-mail.
Because of the nature of this contest, it is impossible to exclude work that may be previously familiar to the judge; however, every effort shall be made to select the finest representative titles from a wide aesthetic range. The goal of the ReBound Series is not to reward friends and acquaintances, but to bring deserving poetry titles back into print, where they will gain an extended readership.

ABOUT THE SERIES JUDGE: Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Ron Mohring received a B.A. in English from the University of Houston and an M.F.A. in Poetry from Vermont College. His chapbooks include Amateur Grief (Thorngate Road), Beneficence (Pecan Grove), The David Museum (New Michigan Press), and Touch Me Not (Two Rivers Review). His full-length collection, Survivable World, won the 2003 Washington Prize. Mohring's honors include the Frank O'Hara Chapbook Prize; The Oscar Wilde Award from Gival Press; and the Philip Roth Residence in Creative Writing and Stadler Fellowship, both from Bucknell University. For six years, he served on the editorial staff of West Branch, first as an associate editor, then as fiction editor, and finally as interim editor prior to his departure from Bucknell in 2007. He is currently a visiting assistant professor at Lycoming College.

April 18th - 25th 2009: Judith Barrington will teach a memoir class in Alicante, Spain.

"YOUR MEMOIR AND ITS CHARACTERS": a week-long workshop with Judith Barrington at the Almàssera Vella in the village of Relleu (near Alicante, Spain). This course will address the craft of literary memoir with an emphasis on the writing about the characters who appear in your personal story, including you the narrator.

JUDITH BARRINGTON is the author of Lifesaving: A Memoir, which won the 2001 Lambda Book Award and was a finalist for the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for the Art of the Memoir. She is also the author of Writing the Memoir: From Truth to Art and three collections of poetry, including Horses and the Human Soul. She is a faculty member of the University of Alaska, Anchorage’s low-residency MFA Program and also teaches workshops in Britain.

ALMASSERA VELLA is a large, village house--Relleu’s original olive press with views of Moorish ruins and surrounding mountains. Opened in 2002 by Christopher and Marisa North as a Literature and Arts Centre, it has comfortable bedrooms, mostly private bathrooms, a large day-room, loggia, a 3000 book library, a refectory and a meeting place with fireplace. Outside there is an extensive rear terrace, swimming pool and almond orchard. In the nearby grounds there is a ruined Moorish farm-house and olive grove.

RELLEU is an ancient mountain village in the dramatic Marina Baja mountains. It is a half hour drive from the sea at Villajoyosa and an hour from Alicante airport. Transport is provided from the airport to the village.

2009 Robin Becker Chapbook winners

Many thanks to all who've made the second annual Robin Becker Chapbook Prize such a success. Ruth L. Schwartz has selected the winning manuscripts. For a poet with previous chapbook publication, Ruth has selected "Inland Sea" by Erin Bertram. For a poet without previous chapbook publication, Ruth has selected "Scavenge" by RJ Gibson. The winning poets will each receive $100, and their chapbooks will be published this coming winter. We are delighted to publish both these poets, and want to extend special thanks to Ruth for serving as this year's judge.

Erin M. Bertram is the author of seven chapbooks, including The Most Wild, Kindly Green (Achiote Press, 2009) and Body of Water (Thorngate Road, 2007), which received the Frank O'Hara Award.

RJ Gibson is a student in poetry in the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers. In 2008 he was a Poetry Fellow in the Lambda Literary Foundation’s New & Emerging Writers Retreat. His work has appeared in Knockout, OCHO, BLOOM, qarrtsiluni, Ganymede, Six Sentences, and the anthology My Diva: 65 Gay Men on the Women Who Inspire Them. He lives and works in West Virginia.

Prize: $100 plus 25 copies.
Submission deadline: Postmarked between May 1 and July 15 of each year.
Eligibility: Open to all Pennsylvania writers. [*We consider a "Pennsylvania writer" as one who was born in, or has lived in, Pennsylvania, as well as any writer with a self-defined "Pennsylvania connection."]

Schwartz is the author of four award-winning books of poetry and a memoir: Dear Good Naked Morning, selected by Alicia Ostriker for the Autumn House Poetry Prize (Autumn House, 2004); Edgewater, selected by Jane Hirshfield as a 2001 National Poetry Series winner (HarperCollins, 2002); Singular Bodies (Anhinga Press, 2001), winner of the 2000 Anhinga Prize for Poetry; Accordion Breathing and Dancing (University of Pittsburgh Press, 1996), winner of the 1994 Associated Writing Programs Award; and Death in Reverse: A Love Story (Michigan State University Press, 2004).

Ruth has won over a dozen national literary prizes, including two Nimrod/Pablo Neruda Awards, two Chelsea Magazine Editor's Awards, the North Carolina Writer's Network Randall Jarrell Prize, and the New Letters Prize in Poetry. She has received grants from the NEA, the Ohio Arts Council, and the Astraea Foundation. Her poems have been anthologized in The World in Us: Lesbian and Gay Poetry of the Next Wave (St. Martin's Press, 2000), American Poetry: Next Generation (Carnegie-Mellon University Press, 2000), The New Young American Poets (Southern Illinois University Press, 2000), and elsewhere.

ABOUT THE SERIES:

This chapbook series honors Robin Becker, whose continuing accomplishments as a poet, professor, and mentor of lesbian and gay writers deserve wider acclaim. Becker serves as poetry editor for the Women's Review of Books and is a professor of English and Women's Studies at Pennsylvania State University. She is the author of six collections of poems, including Giacometti's Dog (1990), All-American Girl (1996), The Horse Fair (2000) and Domain of Perfect Affection (2006), all from the University of Pittsburgh Press, and of the chapbook Venetian Blue (Frick Art & Historical Center, 2002).

Becker's honors include individual fellowships from the Bunting Institute, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She won the 1996 Lambda Literary Award for All-American Girl, and the 1997 Virginia Faulkner Prize for Excellence in Writing from Prairie Schooner Magazine. In 1998, Becker was a visiting Scholar at the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies at the City University of New York. In 2007, she was the Sandra and Gary Sojka Visiting Poet at Bucknell University. She has served as final judge for many national poetry competitions including the Astrea Awards, the Benjamin Saltman Prize from Red Hen Press, The Idaho Prize from Lost Horse Press, the John Ciardi Prize from Bk Mk Press, and the Prairie Schooner Book Award in Poetry. Announcing the 7KP ReBound Series

SEVEN KITCHENS PRESS is excited to announce a new chapbook series: the ReBound Series will further expand our mission to bring new and/or underappreciated writers to a broader audience by reprinting out-of-print chapbooks in select new editions. Each title in the series will feature an introductory foreword by a nominating writer (who will be given the opportunity to edit the introduction); self-nominations will not be accepted. As with all our titles, the authors (if available) will work closely with the editor in the production process; each chapbook will feature a full-color cover and ISBN, and will be printed in an initial set of 125 copies. (Subsequent printings will follow if the initial print run sells out.) Complete guidelines are below:

The ReBound Series from Seven Kitchens Press will select one to two out-of-print chapbooks each fall to publish in new editions the following calendar year. Each chapbook submitted for consideration must be accompanied by two- to five-paragraph nomination, completed by a writer other than the author. This nomination may be sent separately, and will be edited to serve as the introductory foreword to the winning chapbook(s).

The annual reading period will extend from September 21 - December 21, and the selected title(s) will be announced the following February.

Each winning author will receive fifty (50) copies of his or her hand-trimmed, hand-tied chapbook. Additionally, the publisher will distribute ten review copies to reviewers, libraries, and organizations at the author's recommendation.

Nominated chapbooks may not exceed 27 pages in length (excluding front matter). Chapbooks published within larger bound works (i.e., as a section in a literary journal or as part of an omnibus volume) are eligible. Chapbooks published online are not eligible: we are looking to revive out-of-print work.

Submit an original copy of the chapbook, along with a cover letter of nomination by a second writer. [NOTE: The nomination letter may be sent separately, but must be provided for the winning title(s) as part of the editorial process.] Chapbooks may be submitted by either the author or nominator, but must be accompanied by a $12 reading fee, payable by check to Ron Mohring or via PayPal to sevenkitchens at yahoo dot com.

Do not include SASE or SAS postcard for acknowledgment; work received will be publicly logged by title and manuscript number on the Seven Kitchens blog.

Manuscripts will not be returned. If you do not wish to send a rare copy of the chapbook, please send a clean, legible photocopy of all pages, including the front and back cover.

Each manuscript must be accompanied by a signed statement from the author, nominator or literary executor, attesting that the work is out of print. Winners will be responsible for securing reprint permission from the original publisher within three months of 7KP's winning announcement.

Each entrant will receive one copy of the winning chapbook (if more than one winning title is selected, entrants may choose which title they would like to receive). Entrants are responsible for keeping the press apprised of changes in address or contact e-mail.

The judge for this series is Ron Mohring. Because of the nature of this contest, it is impossible to exclude work that may be previously familiar to the judge; however, every effort shall be made to select the finest representative titles from a wide aesthetic range. The goal of the ReBound Series is not to reward friends and acquaintances, but to bring deserving poetry titles back into print, where they will gain an extended readership.

ABOUT THE SERIES JUDGE: Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Ron Mohring received a B.A. in English from the University of Houston and an M.F.A. in Poetry from Vermont College. His chapbooks include Amateur Grief (Thorngate Road), Beneficence (Pecan Grove), The David Museum (New Michigan Press), and Touch Me Not (Two Rivers Review). His full-length collection, Survivable World, won the 2003 Washington Prize. Mohring's honors include the Frank O'Hara Chapbook Prize; The Oscar Wilde Award from Gival Press; and the Philip Roth Residence in Creative Writing and Stadler Fellowship, both from Bucknell University. For six years, he served on the editorial staff of West Branch, first as an associate editor, then as fiction editor, and finally as interim editor prior to his departure from Bucknell in 2007, where he also taught creative writing. Robin Becker Chapbook Prize announced

Many thanks to all who supported this year's inaugural Robin Becker Chapbook Prize. Our judge, Robin Becker, has selected Judith Barrington's "Lost Lands" as the winning manuscript. Lost Lands is set for release on (or as close as we can get to) October 1, 2008.

Also selected was Steven Riel's "Postcard from P-Town," which is tentatively set for publication on February 15, 2009.

Finally, we're pleased to announce the publication of Matthew Hittinger's "Platos de Sal," scheduled for release in late spring of 2009.

Entrants to this year's Robin Becker Chapbook competition will each receive a copy of Lost Lands this fall. Ten finalists remain in contention for the Robin Becker Chapbook Prize. We're very close to announcing the winner and finalists; please stay tuned. (Authors will be contacted privately before the winners' information is posted here.)

Update: after consultation with our judges and authors, we've decided to publish all our titles in initial printings of 125 copies. (Previously, we stated that runner-up manuscripts would be published in editions of 100.) Authors will still receive fifty copies, which will include 13 (half) of an initial set of numbered & signed copies.

The 2008 Keystone Chapbook Prize - for Pennsylvania poets.

Any poet who was born, has lived, or currently lives in Pennsylvania is eligible to submit to the Keystone Chapbook Prize. Additionally, poets living elsewhere may submit manuscripts which show a strong connection to Pennsylvania.

PRIZE: $100 plus 25 copies, with publication in late fall of 2008.

SUBMISSIONS ACCEPTED between May 1 & July 15, 2008.

READING FEE: $12.

MS. GUIDELINES: Submit a paginated manuscript of 16-24 pages (not including front matter) of poetry. Include two cover pages: one with the manuscript title, author name, address, e-mail and phone number; the second cover page should have the manuscript title only. Include a table of contents page. Include, if applicable, an acknowledgments page for work previously published. Please include, on a separate page, a brief (100-150 words) biographical note, which must address your specific connection to Pennsylvania (if you do not currently reside here). The author’s name should not appear in the manuscript. All manuscripts will be blind judged, meaning all identifying material will be separated from the manuscripts as they are logged in.
